Building a Beginner Strength Routine at Home

Use this practical guide to decide what fits your workout routine, space and budget. Recommendations are based on general equipment-selection principles, not personal product tests.
Start with manageable movement
A simple routine can include a squat variation, a hinge, a push, a pull and a carry or core exercise, adapted for individual ability. You do not need a machine for every muscle.
Make consistency achievable
Schedule two manageable strength sessions each week with recovery between similar hard efforts. Start with exercises you can perform with comfortable form and progress gradually.
Choose gear based on gaps
Try the movements before shopping. A stable chair, a mat or appropriately chosen resistance bands may be enough for some movements; other exercises benefit from well-chosen dumbbells.
Adjust for your health
Anyone with injuries, symptoms or medical restrictions should seek individualized advice from a qualified professional. Stop exercises that cause pain, dizziness or concerning symptoms.
